BLADEN COUNTY Farm Bureau Women’s Committee held its annual Red Cross blood drive for members at the Elizabethtown Farm Bureau office. This year’s blood drive was very successful with many first-time donors.
BUNCOMBE COUNTY Farm Bureau presented a “learning barn” loaded with books and other teaching materials to Haw Creek Elementary School. The barn will be used by all students and was placed in a central reading area in the school.
CABARRUS COUNTY Farm Bureau member Thomas Porter Jr. pictured third from left, with his wife, Vicky, has been selected as the 2011 Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year. A successful livestock farmer, Porter raises poultry, hogs and beef cattle. The Farmer of the Year award recognizes excellence in agricultural production and management, along with leadership in community and farm organizations. The award also honors family contributions in producing safe and abundant supplies of food, fiber and shelter products for U.S. consumers.
CARTERET COUNTY Farm Bureau recently donated $4,000 to the Carteret County 4-H to send children to summer camp at the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center. Program assistant Danielle Clark attended the September board meeting to show photos of the trip and present the board with a collage made by children who attended the camp..
CASWELL COUNTY Farm Bureau member David Berry Jr. won two World Championship titles and a Reserve World Championship title at the American Ranch Horse Association World Championship Show. The event was held July 18-23 in Wilmington, Ohio. Berry, who owns and operates David Berry Performance Horses, also won the senior cutting event with a quarter horse named Stylish Mr. Kim, and he won in the working ranch horse class with a mare named Zippos Yellowversion.
FORSYTH COUNTY Farm Bureau donated $4,000 to help create the new Triad Farm to Table community supported agriculture (CSA) program this summer. Board member James Hester is the director of Triad Farm to Table, which involves farmers from Forsyth and surrounding counties to meet the demand and offers eight pick-up sites for customers’ convenience. About 140 customers signed up for the first summer CSA, and the group just wrapped up a six-week fall CSA. The money helped buy boxes, a laptop, a printer and pay the co-managers until the CSA was up and running. Farm Bureau members volunteer, serve on the board and grow for the CSA.
GREENE COUNTY Farm Bureau’s Board of Directors and Women’s Committee donated $1,000 to Greene County Middle School to help purchase teaching supplies for teachers. The school was destroyed by the April 2011 tornadoes.
GUILFORD COUNTY Farm Bureau donated $5,000 to sponsor the Guilford County and Greensboro District Junior Dairy Show on July 26-27. There were 38 participants.
HARNETT COUNTY Farm Bureau gave out goodie bags containing a Farm Bureau pencil, a small notepad, a pack of Lance crackers and an apple to all 280 Harnett Central Middle School bus drivers on Aug. 22.
HAYWOOD COUNTY Farm Bureau provided sun-safe hats and sunscreen to all registered attendees at the annual Forage Field Day at the Mountain Research Station in Waynesville. Farm Bureau wanted to offer the materials there because farmers who produce hay are usually exposed to the sun frequently. The event included agenda items such as fertilization, weed identification and control products, dealer-provided equipment displays and field demonstrations and forage nutritional information.
HOKE COUNTY Farm Bureau hosted a Commodity Committee Workshop on Aug. 29, with North Carolina Farm Bureau volunteer leaders from six counties participating.
Harrison Jenkins, the son of IREDELL COUNTY Farm Bureau members and LEAD Program participants Tracey and Sheila Jenkins, received the First Place Field Crop Placement Proficiency Award during the 2011 NC FFA Association convention. He is a junior at Alexander Central High School.
MACON COUNTY Farm Bureau’s Women’s Committee gave out goody bags to Macon County Schools bus drivers for Bus Driver Appreciation Day on Aug. 2. Every bus driver in the county received one.
MADISON COUNTY Farm Bureau presented a $1,500 check to Madison High School FFA on Aug. 12. The donation helped with costs for horse shows in August and September at the Madison County Fairgrounds and helped send FFA students to the national convention in Indianapolis where the livestock judging team was to compete.
UNION COUNTY Farm Bureau board member Frank Howey was recently featured in an article in the Union County Enquirer Journal. Howey was highlighted for being the county’s first farmer to participate in a land preservation project to keep Frank Howey Farm in agricultural use. The land was purchased by the Catawba Lands Conservancy. Howey said in the article that he’s putting the land into conservation because he believes in the importance of keeping food production close to the population to reduce transport costs, air pollution and spoiled produce.
NEW HANOVER COUNTY Farm Bureau donated $10,300 to the UNC-Wilmington Shellfish Research Hatchery for a special study on oysters. The Board of Directors had visited this project and North Carolina Farm Bureau President Larry Wooten joined them there on Sept. 7 for the check presentation and a tour of the facility.
WAKE COUNTY Farm Bureau members Fred Burt and John Burt hosted a farm tour for agricultural education instructors from four Wake County high schools. Extension agent Laura Martin joined the group to discuss agriculture in Wake County. Teachers also learned about Farm Bureau’s programs and scholarships and the ways in which Wake County Farm Bureau supports FFA.
WARREN COUNTY Farm Bureau Women’s Committee members Judy Seaman and chairperson Ann Kilian distributed Farm Bureau brochures and other items of interests to visitors during “Tourism Day” May 13 at the North Carolina Welcome Center on I-85 in Warren County.

WARREN COUNTY Farm Bureau Women’s Committee co-chair Ann Johnson presented a framed placement promoting Warren County agriculture to Lisa Blackwell, owner of Southern City Café in Warrenton, who will place it over the buffet. The placemats were distributed to local restaurants this past spring.

HERTFORD COUNTY Farm Bureau board member Jimmy Mason hosted a 4-H camp group at his farm on Aug. 9, and Hertford County Farm Bureau served lunch. Mason talked to the kids about growing cucumbers and farm safety.
